The Raj is a medium sized restaurant on Pattaya Tai (Pattaya South Road), between Beach Road Second Road. If you walk up Pattaya Tai, it’s on the left about half way up. Anyway, we’ve got you there now. They do a full variety of curries, and to test them we had our usual crop.

The onion bhaji, our standard starter, was tasty and smelled great. The mint yoghurt sauce we normally expect was missing, but did come when asked for. The chicken tikka masala was outstanding and just about the right heat. The keemae mutter was a little disappointing, but not too bad. The flavour wasn’t what I’ve come to expect. The big disaster was the naan bread which was unexplainable greasy, as was the paratha we had as well. Naan should be cooked in the tanddor (which this restaurant claims is one of its strong points) and should not go anywhere near any grease. But this one obviously had been in a pan somewhere along the line.

In the past the restaurant had been bigger. Then a travel agent took out one corner, now a tailors has encroached into the place. Still, it’s quite large and serves a good meal. The only downside was the bill – at 700B per head it was higher than we felt it should have been, considering we only drank water and soda with the meal. Points out of 10 -probably a 6. One lost for the naan, one for the mutter and two for the price. Not that expensive is bad – as long as you get value for money and that wasn’t too obvious here.

OK three curry places down and one to go for the grand finale of our curry series and it may well surprise you.
