I have received a copy of a book by Patrick Everard. Here’s the review
Twenty-something and gay, Blue has sold up his London flat and gone to live in Manila, vibrant capital of the Philippines – home to hustlers, ladyboys and a notorious criminal underworld. Blue wants sex and he wants adventure and he very quickly seems to be getting both… by the shovelful. But, as always, there are complications. Before long he finds himself in loco parentis to an abandoned street kid and, worse, he’s falling in love with his first one-night stand, the gorgeous, intelligent Filipino journalist Troy. More perplexing still, though, is Blue’s friendship with another expat, the charming and wealthy Sidney Hamilton. A sixty-year-old who claims to be a former West End stage actor, whose most pronounced taste nowadays seems to be a cocktail of Manila’s handsome street hustlers, and an endless supply of martinis. What is Sidney’s relationship with his thuggish sidekick, the menacing, glowering Geordie? Working Boys in Pattaya – a Tale of Sin City
One of our friends is researching the history of Sunee Plaza. He is trying to get the names of the various bars down before everyone forgets them. So he has asked us for help. He has had some interesting information and photos so far. This picture shows Nok Nok and the Vienna Restaurant, as well as Eldorado and Apollo Beer Garden. However he’d love more if you can help. If your memory of Sunee Plaza goes back that far, he would love to chat. We’ve had a number of replies and have published the full list WE KNOW of here. This bar has more do’s and don’ts on it than I’ve had hot dinners!
Here are some of the rules and signs:
- Admitted over 18 only
- This premises has been cleaned and disinfected
- No own drinks allowed
- No pets allowed
- No guns allowed
- No smoking
- No ladyboys allowed
- No drugs allowed
- No love making or sexy posing allowed
Furthermore on the right there’s a big list of advice. I won’t print the whole list, but my favourites were:
DON’T
- Don’t argue with Bar girls, you don’t need a plank or bottle over your head.
- Don’t walk around on the street drinking a bottle of beer, you don’t want to be mistaken for a drunker.
- Don’t shout in public ( to anybody ) if you want to argue with your wife or with your girlfriend do this in the privacy of your hotel room and not in public
- Think that Thai women are ” easily available ” Though around 1% of the female population is working in the sex industry, this also means that 99% is not working there! You can get yourself in big trouble if you offend a women in this way. Her husband may find he should take revenge, which could be very unpleasant for you
- Don’t take advice from any Farang who has spent the past 20 years sitting on a bar stool ad a bar-beer in Changmai. he knows nothing.
