This is what the area is now known for. It has more restaurants per square Thai boy than any other gay area. Have a good wander round and try a few. They are all good (although in an Orwellian way some are more good than others). You will enjoy finding your favourites!

Alicia’s

Due to open mid January. We’ve had the following email from the owners:

“This restaurant is currently closed for renovations. Also, the entire concept will be changed from what it was (Itlian Ristoranta) to a place where one can relax in very comfy’ armchairs with big pillows; lots of greenery, a pool-table an great background tunes. The ambiance will be very conductive to a relaxing time. At the new “Alicia’s” you will also find a brilliantly varied Snack-Meal Menu, with delicacies like: Dutch Meat Croquettes-on-Bread; Indonesian Sateh-with-peanut-sause; Pancakes (various); Tender-Chicken Dill-Potato Salad and much more. Also the bar wil be open with all the usual; but a special ‘page’ has been reserved for healthy drinks like Water-Melon Delight; Lime-Delight and a few others. Theother excellent news is that the pricing at Alicia’s will come as a pleasant surprise to many of you: that’s a promise ! Keep a eye on this page for news about the re-opening, which we expect to be within the next 2 weeks. Look forward to seeing you there soon. Jean-Claude (Your Host @ Alicia’s)”

Bordeaux Restaurant

Great French restaurant in the heart of the day/night complex. It has a good reputation and it is well deserved. The meals are very well prepared, the menu is imaginative and the final result is extremely tasty. It’s not the cheapest place around, but then quality doesn’t come cheap. And it’s far from being the most expensive. It is, however, great value for money.

Of all the French restaurants in the day/night area (and there are now many) this is far in a way the best in my opinion.

Try it please!

La Cuisine Au Beurre Restaurant

Cuisine au BeurreThe name translates to “Butter Kitchen”. Does that make me want to go there? Good French and Thai cuisine at a reasonable price. Has an extensive menu plus daily specials at budget prices. Well worth popping up to and checking out the board at the front. However, just not quite up to the standard of the others around it. Perhaps I’ve been a bit harsh with my rating, but give it a try and see. Some people I know really rave over it. The breakfast is one of the better and cheaper ones in the area. That at least is an are they shine in.

Dolphin Restaurant

dolphinGerman themed restaurant doing two set meal specials nightly. It’s really, really good. The only problem is it is closed on Thursdays, otherwise I’d be tempted to eat there 7 days a week. For the price (245 or 295B) it can’t be beaten. Good service and an a la carte menu too. It does a “Farmer’s Buffet” on Wednesdays. That’s a treat too! Of all the places in Day/Night, this gets my highest rating.

Gossip Cafe

Gossip CafeA plain ordinary and unpretentious cafe, and all the better for that. Open 24 hours (a boon for early risers who want a breakfast), and it does a nice coffee. I understand it has free wi-fi for diners. Well worth trying. Cheap and cheerful and you get better than you pay for! Clean and nice.

Grottino Gourmet Bakery

GrottinoI don’t know about being a gourmet bakery, but it’s a reasonable restaurant. The food is European, and good value. Look out for their specials on the blackboard outside. Always tasty, good value and worth checking out. The breakfast is particularly good.

Media Cafe

Media CafeFormerly Googies, this cafe has had a couple of names since. Now, however, it seems to be making a go of it. Run by Pattaya People newspaper (next door) they have flat screen TVs outside broadcasting their TV channel and a DJ booth (although I rarely see anyone DJing in it).

The food is OK, just a tad pricey for what you get, but the breakfasts are good. Maybe this time round it will make a go of it? With the backing of Niels Colov and the Pattaya People group, it’s bound to!

My Thai Restaurant

My ThaiOn the ground floor of the old Flamingo hotel was a large, wood panelled bar. It has now opened up as a new restaurant. The My Thai restaurant has the theme Thai and French food. The menu is mainly Thai with a sprinkling of French. The place is soul-less and huge. The staff inattentive and the prices too high. Apart from that it’s good!

Osaka Japanese Restaurant

Newly discovered that Osaka has a gay owner, the place has been in the Soi “for ever”. However they have a great following and with the owner, we have decided to list the place. The Osaka Japanese Restaurant does a wonderful selection of Sushi, Sashimi, Tempura and all things Japanese. The tempura is especially nice, being crispy and light.

The prices are not cheap, but right for the style of food. The place itself is one of those small, “blink and you miss it” places, but it’s worth not blinking.

If you like authentic Japanese food try here.

La Petite Planète Restaurant

Petite PlaneteNice French Restaurant with some great daily specials from around 300 Baht. Reasonable price and normally very good food. The set menu is around 300B for three courses. They have a weekend special a little more money (around 350B for one course) but worth it. Look out for the Couscous Royale and the Rabbit Stew. Both are fantastic and I’d go out of my way to have these.

Downsides? Recently I went there and had the tuna steak – however this turned out to be a tuna burger. It was badly overcooked and rubbery. Sorry, but when the owner asked me how the food was and I told him, he argued and even brought out the pack of raw tuna. yes the label said tuna steak, but … This was definitely not up to their normal standard. There are too many restaurants around to upset a regular customer.

So all in all, I have a personal thing about it, but apart from that it’s really good. I do go back. The one incident has not been repeated.

Salt & Pepper

Nice restaurant serving reasonably priced Thai food. The selection is good, and it’s well presented and well served. It’s open all day from breakfast to evening and worth popping in to. For many people it’s a favourite and they would recommend it. I have other places I tend to eat, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with S & P. In fact, having written this I’m going in there tonight!

Maybe see you there? N
